Break Free Together is a not-for-profit organization serving individuals recovering from gender- and sexuality-based religious trauma, and a community committed to releasing shame and claiming our whole selves.

We’ve hosted story exchanges around the world—in metropolises like London, New York City, and San Francisco’s Bay Area, and small, rural communities such as Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

We’ve collected stories via post cards and shared them on social media.

And we’ve gathered experts addressing purity culture from around the world to engage in community- and field-building efforts—from activists, academics, clinicians and clergy to musicians, dancers, playwrights, and poets.

We are currently planning the next phase of our work. Sign up for the newsletter for more information when available.

Story Exchange

Do you want to help others heal from purity culture? Host a purity culture story exchange!

Several years ago, Linda hosted her first potluck dinner for people raised in conservative religious communities with “some things to work out around gender and sexuality.” They gathered around her dining room table and exchanged stories, moving from silence and shame into voice and community. That first dinner was such a success that they gathered again the next month, and the next, and the next for over the year. When Linda launched Break Free Together, she brought the story exchange model to churches, seminaries, backyards, kitchens and living rooms around the world.

On the surface, we’re just telling stories. No lesson, no confession, just a chance to tell the truth about our lives. We share our stories. And we listen to the stories of others. It’s that simple. (Simple. Not easy.)

But beneath the surface, we are upending everything we’ve been taught. Many of us have been silenced – sometimes severely. We’ve been shamed. And we’ve internalized that shame, resulting in everything inside of us screaming that we can’t ever talk about our fear, our anxiety, our confusion, or our pain. But we know better. We know if we want to heal, we have to get real about where we’ve been, where we are, and where we hope to go with people who get it.

We paused the story exchange model at the top of the pandemic and are in the midst of pivoting our work in this area to reach an even large audience. Stay tuned for more details as they are available.

“In the years of group work training I’ve undergone, readings, social work classes, and my own experiences as a group facilitator,
I have never seen such a clear, useful outline of how to create safety, promote conversation and facilitate.”

I’ve been waiting for this my entire life, but I didn’t know it until today.

Send a Postcard

Want to share your story, but feel a little nervous about attaching your name or social media ID to it? Send a post card!

You’re welcome to download the postcard we created for you here, or find a postcard that speaks to you personally. Consider the question: “What did you learn about sexuality growing up and what have been the legacies of those teachings on your adult life?” Then simply share a resonant word or phrase, write your story, or even draw it. For more inspiration, consider some of the other questions to the right. Sign your postcard, or don’t. And send it to:
